Comfort Movies

When I'm feeling a little blue and need a bit of a pick-me-up, there are a few feel-good movies that I might pop into the VCR or DVD player. Many of them are classics and, depending on whether I want to laugh or just go "Awwww," I might watch any or all of these. Here they are, along with my favorite line from the movie:

The Wizard of Oz ("These things must be handled delicately, delicately.")

The Sound of Music (No favorite lines on this one. I just love the music and the story.)

Arsenic and Old Lace ("Insanity runs in my family. It practically gallops.")

Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein ("I saw what I saw when I saw it." I don't know why that strikes my funny bone. It just does.)

Casino Royale (I actually have a few favorite lines from this one, which I've blogged about before, but here... Okay, I'll admit. This one's here for the eye candy value.)

Comedy of Terrors ("To paraphrase that venerable adage, we'll be able to kill two birds with one pillow.")

What about you? Any favorite movies you use to get you out of an emotional slump?

"It's A Wonderful Life" does it to me everytime!

Oh! and "The Princess Bride." I can watch that movie 10 times a day and still laugh just as hard everytime as I did the first.
"Inconceivable!"

Sam, it's probably just me, but I've never been able to get into The Princess Bride. I don't know why--I certainly have the skewed Mel Brooks sort of sense of humor. Maybe I'll have to rent it one day here and see what I'm missing. :)

I'll second The Princess Bride. I also love watching Phantom of the Opera. Makes me gooey inside. :)

Christine, I'm assuming you mean the new one with Gerard Butler? You know, I've had that sitting on an end table in my living room for probably 2 months and *still* haven't gotten around to watching it. But I loved the play when I saw it in Toronto, so I hope the movie is at least as good. :)

Strangely enough it's not a Mel Brooks Film, but instead it's Rob Reiner :-D

Well, but it's got the same kind of humor, right? At least, that's what I've gotten from the little bit of it I've watched. Maybe that's my problem. It's not "earthy" enough (like Mel Brooks)! :)

Sherrill!! I'm going to have to sit down with you and show you the joy that is The Princess Bride. And I'm a Mel Brooks connoisseur. In fact, my two all time favorite comfort movies because they remind me of the purity of my childhood days, are Mel Brooks' Blazing Saddles and Carl Reiner's The Russians are Coming, the Russians are Coming. Yeah...warped comedy defines my worldview ;)

Kelly, I LOVE The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming! "Emergency. Emergency. Everybody to get from streets." Remember that? LOL
